GDA 2020 support in Mapinfo

In December 2017 ICSM (Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping) published additional details about GDA 2020 datum support.

It is very straightforward to add support for GDA 2020 datum to MapInfo by modifying mapinfow.prj file. We will use custom datum definition based on 7-parameter similarity transformation published by ICSM.

 

For Longitude/Latitude coordinate system you need to add this line to PRJ file:

"Longitude / Latitude (Australia GDA 2020)", 1, 9999, 0, -0.06155, 0.01087, 0.04019, 0.0394924, 0.0327221, 0.0328979, 0.009994, 0

 

For MGA2020 grid you need to add this group to PRJ file:

"--- Map Grid of Australia 2020 (MGA2020) ---"

ICSM also published NTv2 grids that can be used to calculate coordinate transformation between GDA 94 and GDA 2020 datums. We will publish details on how to incorporate them into your version of MapInfo shortly.

Version 17.0 will support GDA 2020 datum right out of the box.

We are also investigating how to support time dependend datum transformation in a future.

Noting that the url for the tech manual is http://www.icsm.gov.au/gda/GDA2020TechnicalManualV1.1.1.pdf 

All information on the national datum on the ICSM website  is best accessed at from the the url with just "gda" in the path not "gda2020" 

i.e. http://www.icsm.gov.au/gda/.......... not http://www.icsm.gov.au/gda2020............

A bit of background is useful here - "gda2020" did feature in some urls in 2016/2017 but was changed late last year (around when GDA2020 was officially notified and tech manual  v1.1 was released) to be all "gda", with a redirect implemented from the "gda2020" addresses. Many  websites and shared hotlinks pointed to the path with "gda2020" in it but historically the national datum and tech manual info was always available at the "gda" url.

However,  the Tech manual was changed to v1.1.1 yesterday (8 January), so this must have led to the redirect for v1.1 document no longer working today!

So by convention/sign the above values transform GDA2020 to GDA94, is this the intent re support for GDA2020 or more a MapInfo convention?

Using of custom datum (9999) is a workaround that allows customers use GDA2020 in a software that already been released. In version 17.0 we will have GDA 2020 properly defined.
